Voter education and civic engagement - in choosing candidates

 

Right to vote in a political elections , also know as SUFFRAGE is a very powerful weapon that can be used by all those population that is part of a democratic country and fulfill voting age. It holds ample power to shape the future of that particular country and therefore future of their descendants.

In context of Nepal, It was an important moment in the history of the country when it transitioned from monarchy to federal republic in 2008.But the high expectations that Nepali people had from democracy was not met. It was realized that without an active and informed population, democracy, like any other form of government, will be unresponsive to citizens’ needs.

Voter education holds immense importance in Nepal mainly because literacy rates are low, especially in rural areas and so people often do not know about their rights, the electoral process, and how to engage and vote effectively and efficiently. Nepal’s behindhand remote areas and rough terrains do pose significant hindrances to access correct information about the elections and voting procedures. Voter education initiatives are crucial for overcoming these geographical barriers and ensure that even the most isolated areas have access to essential, true and beneficial information.

Additionally, voter education acts as a stabilizing force during times of political instability, reinforcing democratic values and ensuring a consistent civic engagement approach. The goal of voter education is to enable Nepalese citizens to make informed decisions in this multiple-faceted environment.
